WHAT THE COLORS MEAN

A map, with context.

Useful for exploring an area. The sources measure different things, and the colors should be read with those limits in mind.

Rent · existing tenants, all home sizes

Monthly contract rent from the US Census ACS 2020–2024, hosted by Esri (table B25058). These are historical rents paid by existing tenants, in 2024 dollars. Separately paid utilities are excluded. Rent control, apartment size and length of tenancy affect the figures. They are not current asking rents or one-bedroom prices.

Census areas display the published tract median. Named neighborhoods show an approximate renter-weighted average of overlapping tract medians, rounded to $25. Renter counts are allocated by land-area overlap, which assumes an even spread of rental homes within each tract. This is not a statistically estimated neighborhood median. Tract medians above $3,500 are top-coded, so estimates involving those tracts may understate rent. Sampling uncertainty also applies.

Security · city comparisons and neighborhood reports

City comparison: 2025 reported offenses from California DOJ OpenJustice, divided by Census July 1, 2025 city population estimates. The map shows offenses per 1,000 residents with fixed legend thresholds. Violence includes homicide, rape, robbery and aggravated assault. Property includes burglary, larceny-theft and motor-vehicle theft; arson is shown separately in details. Crime counts are agency reports, and incorporated city boundaries/populations approximate police jurisdictions. These are population-normalized reports, not a person's probability of victimization. Commuters, visitors, reporting practices, agency classification and small populations affect comparisons.

Neighborhood detail: unique reported cases occurring in 2025, deduplicated by case ID, from SFPD incident reports, OPD CrimeWatch and BPD's crime map. Violence selects robbery, homicide and aggravated/felony assault. Property selects burglary, theft, vehicle theft and arson; recovered-only vehicles are excluded. Local category definitions differ. Colors rank cases per square kilometer within each city in five groups, using named neighborhoods as the reference. These counts differ from DOJ offenses and cannot be compared to the city-mode rates. They omit unlocated reports and do not measure all security concerns.

Gray means unavailable, never zero or low crime. There is no composite “safe/unsafe” score. Citywide rates are shown only on city polygons. Sheriff contract cities are left uncolored if the source does not report a separate city agency; regional sheriff totals are never substituted. The BART network is geographic context; station-specific police incidents are not included in these municipal measures.

AI safety · hubs, programs & events

Purple markers identify publicly documented office or venue addresses, not guaranteed drop-in spaces. Each entry links to its sources and lists access expectations. Pins geocoded from street addresses are approximate. Programs with unverified or RSVP-hidden addresses remain in the directory without a guessed location. A campus event venue is not presented as a permanent office.

Checked October 10, 2026. Dated event listings are classified as upcoming, past or postponed. Follow organizer calendars for updates. This is a curated selection, not a comprehensive live event feed; organization inclusion is not an endorsement or a claim that its work is exclusively AI safety.

Boundaries & transit

Named boundaries come from Zillow's 2017 neighborhood dataset, via the EPA (CC BY-SA), and the City of Berkeley's neighborhood GIS layer. Names and boundaries are approximate local conventions. Gaps use ACS Census tracts, sometimes clipped to the uncovered area, labeled explicitly as Census areas.

BART's official GTFS feed supplies station positions and route geometry. The downloaded feed lists January 12 to August 30, 2026 as its validity period; it is used only for geographic context. This is not a live service, frequency, fare or journey planner. Station distance is a straight line from an interior point of the area, not a walking route. Albany is included despite having no station of its own.
